About the Percentage Calculator
Percentages appear in shopping, school, work and money. This percentage calculator answers two common questions: what is a certain percent of a number, and by what percent did a value change from one number to another.
How to use the Percentage Calculator
- For a percent of a number, enter the percentage and the number in the first row, for example 15% of 200.
- For a change, enter the starting value in "Change from" and the new value in "to".
- Read the answers in the highlighted boxes.
Good to know
- A percent of a number equals the number multiplied by the percentage and divided by 100.
- Percent change equals the new value minus the old value, divided by the old value, then multiplied by 100. A negative result is a decrease.
- A change from zero cannot be shown as a percentage, so the second answer shows a dash in that case.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a percentage increase?
Subtract the old number from the new number, divide by the old number and multiply by 100.
Why is a 50% rise followed by a 50% fall not back to the start?
The fall is calculated on the larger number, so you end up lower. A 100 item that rises 50% to 150 and then falls 50% is 75.
Can I use decimals?
Yes, you can enter numbers with decimals.
