SHA-256 Hash Generator
Create SHA-1, SHA-256 or SHA-512 hashes.
About the SHA-256 Hash Generator
A hash is a fixed-length fingerprint of your text. The same input always gives the same hash, and even a tiny change gives a completely different one. This tool creates SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512 hashes with your browser's built-in cryptography.
How to use the SHA-256 Hash Generator
- Type or paste your text into the box.
- Choose SHA-256, SHA-1 or SHA-512 from the Algorithm menu.
- Read the hash shown below the box and copy it where you need it.
Good to know
- Hashes are one-way. You cannot turn a hash back into the original text.
- SHA-1 is considered weak for security and should only be used for checksums that do not need protection. SHA-256 is the usual choice.
- Do not store passwords as plain SHA hashes. Use a password hashing method designed for this, such as bcrypt or Argon2.
Frequently asked questions
What is a hash used for?
Common uses are checking that a file or message has not changed, creating identifiers and digital signatures.
Why does my hash differ from another tool?
Check for extra spaces or line breaks in the text. Even one invisible character changes the hash.
Why do I see a message about a secure page?
Browsers only allow this cryptography on secure (https) pages. Open the tool over https.
